SIX CONTINENTS―SIX PORTS

1. Port of Shanghai (Asia)
  • Established in 1842.
  • Location- People's republic of China.
  • It is a deep sea port and a river port.
  • In 2010, Shanghai port overtook the port of Singapore to become the world's busiest container port. This port handled 29.05 million TEUs, where as Singapore's was a half million TEUs behind.
  • In 2016, Shanghai port set a historical record by handling over 37 million TEUs.
2. Port Said (Africa)
  • Established in 1859, during building of Suez canal.
  • Location- Egypt.
  • It is a city that lies in north east Egypt extending about 30 kilometers along the coast of the Mediterranean sea.
  • The economic base of the city is fishing and industries, like chemicals, processed food and cigarettes.
  • It is also an important harbour for exports of Egyptian products like cotton and rice, and also a fueling station for ships that pass through the Suez canal.
  • It thrives on being a duty-free port, as well as a tourist resort especially during summer.
  • Port Said acted as a global city since its establish.
Rudyard Kipling once said, "If you truly wish to find someone you have known and who travels, there are two points on the globe you have but to sit and wait, sooner or later your man will come there: the docks of London and PORT SAID."
3. Port of Rotterdam (Europe)
  • Established in 14th century.
  • Location- Netherlands.
  • It is the largest port in Europe.
  • From 1962 untill 2004 it was the world's busiest port, now overtaken first by Singapore and then Shanghai.
  • In 2011, it was the world's eleventh largest container port in term of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
  • In 2012, Rotterdam was the world's sixth largest port in the term of annual cargo tonnage (ACT).
4. Port of Santos (Latin America)
  • Established in 1892, 2nd february.
  • Location- Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • It is Brazil's leading port inn container traffic and world's 39th largest port in term of container.
  • As of 2006, it is the busiest and largest container port of Latin America.
  • It was once considered 'THE PORT OF DEATH' in the 19th century due to yellow fever, and ships often avoided docking at the wood plank port. The floods in the city's area provoked illnesses.
  • The main product exported by Santos until World War II was Sao Paulo state's huge coffee production, Brazil's largest. Today, coffee has become a smaller component of Brazil's exports and cars, machinery, orange juicesoybeans are now some of the port's main exports.
5. Port of Los Angeles (North America)
  • Establish in 1907, 9th december.
  • Location- San Pedro, USA.
  • It is also called America's port and it is the busiest port of North America.
  • The cargo coming into the port represents approximately 20% of all cargo coming into the United States.
6. Port of Melbourne (Oceania)
  • Established in 1889.
  • Location- West Melbourne, Australia.
  • It is the busiest and largest port of Australia.
  • From may 2003 till may 2004, approximately  3400 ships from 42 different lines called at the port of Melbourne.
  • In 2006-07, it became the first Australian port to handle two million TEUs in a year.
